Dreams are the subconscious speaking in symbols. They're not random noise — they're compressed communications about your fears, desires, unresolved situations and intuitions. The language is symbolic, not literal, which is why direct interpretation usually misses the point.
How to Interpret Correctly
First principle: symbols are personal before they're universal. A dog in a dream means something different to someone who grew up with dogs than to someone who was bitten as a child. Start with your personal associations, not dream dictionaries.
Second principle: focus on the emotional tone, not the content. The feeling in the dream is the core message. Fear, joy, pursuit, release — these are more meaningful than what literally appeared.
Common Symbols — General Meanings
Teeth falling
Anxiety about appearance, communication or control. Fear of loss. Often appears during high-stress transitions.
Flying
Freedom, transcendence, gaining perspective. If easy: feeling capable. If struggling to fly: obstacles to freedom you're working through.
Being chased
Avoiding something. What's chasing you is usually a part of yourself — a decision, emotion or responsibility you're running from.
Water
Emotions. Calm water: emotional stability. Stormy: emotional turbulence. Drowning: overwhelm. Ocean: the unconscious.
House
The self. Each room represents a different aspect of psyche. Unexplored rooms: undiscovered aspects of yourself.
Death
Almost never literal. Transformation, ending of a phase, letting go of an identity. Something in your life is completing.
Ex-partner
Usually not about the person — about what they represented. A quality, a feeling, a dynamic you had or wanted.
Recurring Dreams
Recurring dreams are the subconscious repeating an unresolved message. They stop when the underlying issue is acknowledged and addressed. Keep a dream journal — patterns emerge over weeks that a single dream won't reveal.
